Alliance Executive Director and CEO Appointed Chair of the
ASAE and the Center’s Diversity Committee

Washington, DCAlliance for Nonprofit Management’s executive director and CEO, Tangie Newborn, was recently appointed by the Board of Directors of the American Society of Association Executives & The Center as its 2007-2008 Diversity Committee Chair.

With a distinguished career spanning over 25 years, Ms. Newborn is an association executive veteran and has been a member of the Diversity Committee for three years.  She, along with the committee’s immediate past chair, Leigh Robinson Warfield, developed the committee’s three-year strategic plan approved by the ASAE & The Center’s Board of Directors in Spring 2007.  The Plan includes hosting the first-ever Diversity Summit in 2008; hiring of a staff person to focus on diversity issues faced by member organizations and executives and developing diversity training for the ASAE & The Center’s staff; increased educational offerings; and increased visibility in publications, marketing and leadership opportunities.

"This is a milestone for the Alliance, as well at a pivotal era for the nonprofit sector," said Allen Bromberger, Esq., Alliance Board Chair.  "Tangie’s leadership will be an asset to shaping ASAE to becoming a leader of diversity for the association community."

Newborn's background includes a blend of experience in executive management, strategic planning, program development, adult training, and convention management.  She has successfully led organizations with continuous results in membership growth, fundraising, coalition building, and financial turn-around.  Newborn also serves as a business development consultant and executive coach.

ASAE & The Center serves the entire association profession and have a combined membership of associations representing more than 200 million people.

"The need for diversity in association management, particularly in leadership positions, cannot be overstated," said ASAE & The Center President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. "As chair of ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership’s Diversity Committee, Tangie will have a key role in advising us on ways to integrate and increase diversity within not only our organization, but our entire profession. Tangie’s leadership is all the more critical as we work to implement a first-ever Diversity Forum this coming year."

"The new strategic plan of ASAE & The Center's Diversity Committee is an ambitious plan to address many domains such as shifting generational demographics, complex work patterns, and an increasingly diverse workforce—ethnically, culturally and in lifestyle’ noted Pamela Heman, ASAE & The Center board member and past chair.  Tangie's work on the Diversity Committee for the past few years positions her to undertake the role of committee chair during this important year of work."

A long-time member of ASAE, Newborn also serves on the ASAE CEO Advisory Board, Executive Section Council and most recently, joined ASAE and the Center’s Faculty.  She has been featured in publications such as Executive Update and Associations Now’, has written several articles on association/nonprofit management and is co-author of Membership Operations, a core competencies management series with the ASAE.

“This year marks a historic turning point for ASAE & The Center in regards to diversity issues, and I am pleased to lead the Diversity Committee and move ahead with such a talented group,” said Newborn.  “I look forward to working with the Board and members over the next year to strengthen our knowledge of diversity and our impact on change in this important field.”

Ms. Newborn also brings to this role her leadership as CEO of Alliance for Nonprofit Management, which includes advancing its Cultural Competency Initiative to the work of creating strong and effective nonprofits across the nation.
