Frank J. Omowale Satterwhite, Ph.D. of National Community Development Institute Named Chair of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management

Omowale SatterwhiteWashington, DC - Dr. Frank J. Omowale Satterwhite, nationally known speaker and community builder, was recently elected and named Chair of the Board of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, Alliance executive director and CEO Tangie Newborn announced today.

Dr. Satterwhite is the Founder and Past President of National Community Development Institute (NCDI), located in Oakland, California a technical assistance and training organization that works to build capacity in communities of color and other low-income communities.  In 2007, Satterwhite shifted his role to Founder and Senior Advisor of NCDI, allowing him to devote a greater amount of time to public speaking, writing and community engagement.

"As we continue to build the Alliance as a leader in the nonprofit sector, Omowale will bring forth a mastery of skills and leadership that will further grow our new strategic direction," said Newborn.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Satterwhite was elected by the Alliance Board of Directors as Chair-elect in April 2007.  He will serve a two-year term as Chair of the 1,100 member association and its 10 member board of directors.  Recognizing the organization's influence on the nonprofit sector, Satterwhite has been a strong supporter of the Alliance's Cultural Competency and Standards of Excellence Programs.

Dr. Satterwhite served on the Alliance Board of Directors for four years, as Chair of the Alliance's Program Committee (2006) and on the Cultural Competency Advisory Board (2005-2007).  Prior to founding NCDI, Satterwhite was founder and president of the Community Development Institute (CDI) in East Palo Alto, California. He has also served on several other nonprofit boards including Teen Home and Girls Club of the Mid-Peninsula (East Palo Alto); Applied Research Center and Urban Habitat (Oakland, CA); and Praxis Project (Washington, D.C.).  He has also served on the East Palo Alto City Council and the San Mateo County Planning Commission.

In a typical year, Dr. Satterwhite provides training and consulting to over 75 social justice, health/human services, community development and philanthropic organizations around the country in several cities.

"I am honored to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Alliance," said Satterwhite.  "Since joining the Alliance, I have admired the outstanding leadership provided by our previous Board chairs - Peggy Morrison Outon, Lucille 'Luci' Dabney, David Maurrasse, Natalie Abatemarco and Allen Bromberger - who all had great vision and astute judgment in guiding our organization through its formative years. I humbly accept the baton."
