Wow 10 years! How fast time flies.
When I think about the Alliance 10 years ago and then fast-forward to today, I marvel at the progress we have made. The Alliance was founded in 1997 by six men and women as a result of a merger between Support Centers of America and Nonprofit Management Association. Today the Alliance is 1,100 members strong!
Our growth can clearly be attributed to those who believed in the need to raise the awareness of capacity building and were dedicated to strengthening nonprofits and nonprofit governance. This year we honor our founders and their vision - Karen Simmons (NMA), Peggy Morrison Outon (NMA), Lucy Dabney (NMA), Terry Williams (SCA), Tom Raffa (SCA), and Susan Egmont (SCA). We also honor the Alliance's founding executive director, Roni Posner.
As I visit with nonprofits - both large and small - I get excited when executive directors share their passion in building "Nonprofits of Excellence." As I meet with nonprofit consultants, I am energized to learn of the work they are doing to strengthen the capacity of the nonprofits they serve. These my friends are the capacity builders and members that the Alliance serves.
Today, to foster excellence among those who help nonprofits achieve impact, the Alliance provides a broad network, learning community and resources to "capacity builders", consultants, grantmakers, and researchers that assist nonprofits in fulfilling their mission. Greater demands on the sector call for accountability of nonprofit leaders and governance, which has resulted in greater challenges on capacity builders.
To meet our members' evolving needs, the Alliance continues to assess the effectiveness of its programs; and, our work has invited us to the table with the media, government and grantmakers. There is a new energy surrounding the Alliance, and it's powerful!
We are entering this year of celebration with the unveiling of a new three-year strategic plan (soon to be released); enhanced member programs, benefits and services; increased advocacy for nonprofit excellence; and, strengthening our own capacity. The bottom line is we will continue to grow the field of capacity building -- we will continue to grow the Alliance.
But we can't do this without our members. We need you today more than ever!
We need you to continue sharing your expertise in building Alliance programs and educational initiatives. We need you as a writer, book author and facilitator. We need you to serve on committees. We need you to encourage others to take this Alliance journey with us. We need each member to recruit "just one" new member.
And to our Founders - we need you today even more. Your sage advice and guidance will steer those of us who must continue to walk in your shoes advancing the sector through capacity building.
We have lots of work ahead as we strive to lead by example. When our founders convened in 1997, they came together to develop a more powerful group. So as we look toward the Alliance's future, we must not forget how we got here; and for me, I can think of six good reasons - our Founders.
We thank you Alliance Members for 10 great years! Here's to the next 10!
