Generational Changes: Bridging the Gap

By Peter Brinckerhoff
Author of "Generations: the Challenge of a Lifetime for Your Nonprofit", published by Fieldstone Alliance, May of 2007.

Generation change in nonprofits is on everyone's mind. Foundations study its impact, the sector's press report on different angles of the story, state and national organizations highlight the issue as their annual conference theme. The Alliance has done good work in this area, hosting e-learning sessions on the topic and an area on the Alliance website for Baby Boomer Volunteers.

Questions abound: Will we really run out of good leadership when the boomers retire? What will happen when we start to reshape the role of the executive director to meet the management style of GenX and Gen@? Is this really the coming of the Apocalypse? My answers? No way, don't know, and, of course not.

Resource Insights

There were several interesting publications last month regarding the challenges that nonprofit organizations will face as baby boombers continue to retire and recent college graduates begin to look for careers in the sector.

In the March 6, 2008 edition of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Sam Kean and Suzanne Perry discuss the different motivational characteristics of what drives individuals of different generations toward working in the nonprofit industry in their article "The Young and the Restless."

After completing a national survey of near 6,000 people regarding what they saw as the future challenges and benefits of leading a nonprofit organization, CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in conjunction with Annie E. Casey Foundation, Meyer Foundation and Idealist.org published their findings report. "Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out" focuses on the growing trends that are characteristic of individuals who will lead the nonprofit sector in the coming years. The report "Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out" can be downloaded for free from CompassPoint's website or by clicking here.

Alliance Members Wanted

As many of you know, Alliance members Jan Glick and Maria Gutierrez are conducting research on the art of transforming troubled nonprofits for their new book to be published by Fieldstone Alliance later this year. Many of you who participated in the authors' workshop Extreme Makeover: NonProfit Edition at last year's Alliance conference will remember the lively discussion and exchange of ideas. The authors received invaluable early feedback and research ideas from their colleagues during that session. Since then, many of you have generously shared your professional experiences, specific case studies, and many learnings in turning around organizations in crisis.

The Alliance is delighted that the lifetime work of our members will be so prominently showcased, and believes that this publication will make an important contribution to the literature and to our field, focusing specifically on what it takes to effectively intervene with organizations in severe duress. Whether you are a nonprofit executive, a consultant, a funder or run capacity building programs, please get involved and share your knowledge of nonprofit turnarounds with us by taking a short survey through this link Click here for the survey
