Conceptualization and Design (June 2003 – April 2005):
The CCI originated out of the Alliance People of Color Affinity Group. A working group, including Patricia St.Onge, Alfredo Vergara-Lobo, Monika Moss and Brigette Rouson, gathered with the intent of writing a book about culturally competent capacity building. The concept of the "book project" was expanded into the Cultural Competency Initiative with an initial focus on race/ethnicity. In May 2005, the Alliance received approval for a major grant from The UPS Foundation that enabled us to launch the Initiative.
Launch and Implementation (May 2005 – July 2007):
The CCI launched in May 2005 with the release of the Cultural Competency Resource Pages. Program implementation includes research, training, dissemination, standards and evaluation. Phase II of the Initiative intentionally places an emphasis on equity related to race/ethnicity and "intersections" of identity (such as disability, sexual orientation, etc.). CCI examines how ethnicity is relevant to nonprofit capacity building, leadership and organizational development.
Continuation and Broadening the Scope (January 2007 – July 2008):
Upon completion of the first research paper (the "Framing Paper") the CCI will begin to look more broadly into specific practice areas of nonprofit capacity building, such as strategic planning, board development, coaching, and leadership (executive transition and next generation). It will also broaden in scope to go beyond the initial focus on racial equity and take a deeper view into the dynamics of other identities as central factors in nonprofit effectiveness, including gender, sexual identity, disability, class, geographic base, etc.
