Member Spotlight: Debra McKeon, NorthSky Nonprofit Network
NorthSky Nonprofit Network is the capacity building program of Rotary Charities of Traverse City, a public foundation.  Our mission is to help nonprofit organizations in Northern Michigan achieve and sustain excellence through capacity building and sustainability support.  NorthSky provides a wide range of services and resources to help nonprofit organizations achieve maximum results with their dual bottom line.  Services include the professional development series, fee-based consulting, free business development counseling, an extensive online resource center and support to consortium groups.  It also serves as an advocate-securing state and national political support and technical and financial resources to benefit the nonprofit sector in the region.

NorthSky Nonprofit Network services a primarily rural region, which has a relatively small critical mass of nonprofit organizations and significant distances between communities. Therefore the NorthSky capacity building network is relatively small as well and somewhat isolated from the stimulation of larger capacity building networks in metropolitan regions. The needs of the nonprofit sector in the service region are equally as sophisticated and complex as in other regions. It is a priority of NorthSky to provide vehicles for members of its network to stay connected to others in the field and continue to be stimulated by participating in innovative thinking to benefit our work. Participation in the Alliance for Nonprofit Management fulfills that role.

We joined the Alliance to be part of the larger community of people engaged in work, strategic development and innovation in the nonprofit sector. At NorthSky, we are committed to providing professional development opportunities for our team, consistent with the recommendations we provide to other nonprofit organizations. The ability to adapt and innovate to meet the challenges and opportunities of work in this sector can be accelerated by facilitating opportunities to share ideas, strategies and practices.
