Building Strong Communities Through Multi-Cultural Leadership

Presenters:  Vicki Asakura, Judy de Barros and Jesus Rodriguez, Nonprofit Assistance Center

This interactive workshop will present 3 successful models for building community capacity and multi-cultural leadership in diverse communities.  Participants will learn how these models were developed and implemented, challenges and successes encountered, techniques and approaches, and will identify key aspects of leadership development and how it affects community change.  Discussion will include sharing of participants’ experiences and how fostering multi-ethnic leadership builds strong organizations and communities.

Building Successful Cohorts to Create Optimal Community Impact

Presenters:  Marnie Webb, CompuMentor; Emily Bancroft, NPower; Amy Luckey, Blueprint Research & Design, Inc.

A single nonprofit can achieve measurable and meaningful goals. But for the larger issues that we are working toward — a clean environment, a lower crime rate, and an educated urban population — nonprofits that work as a group can often create greater and more lasting impact.  This highly interactive session focuses on what a cohort of nonprofits needs to work together in achieving community goals. Experts will address crucial questions around cohort management, share lessons learned from working on cohort projects, and report on the latest research around this topic. Participants will gain a solid understanding of how to successfully plan, manage and evaluate the many facets of a cohort project.

Capacity-Building Strategies for Greater Community Impact

Presenter:  Kennard Wing, Kennard T. Wing & Company

Based on a blend of practical experience and evaluation research, this session will give descriptions and real-life examples of capacity-building strategies likely to achieve measurable community impact.  Strategies at both the agency and metropolitan level are included.  Participants will have the opportunity to share and discuss effective strategies, as well.

Managing a Training Program

Presenters:  Hedy Helsell and Sharon Bailey, Center for Nonprofit Management, Dallas; Denise Harlow, Council of Community Services of NYS, Inc.; Mike Corbin, Michigan Association of Nonprofits

This session, presented by three experienced training directors, will describe: current trends in nonprofit training, successful innovations, great ideas that didn't work, public seminars vs. custom trainings and challenges in marketing.  Appropriate for both the new and seasoned education director.

Network Capacity-Building Initiatives

Presenters:  Bryan Barry and Sandra Jacobsen, Fieldstone Alliance (formerly Wilder Center for Communities)

Helping clusters and networks of organizations achieve a shared goal and build scale is a more effective capacity-building strategy than simply responding to scattered technical assistance requests from individual organizations; it is also less expensive. This session will illustrate three different network capacity-building approaches — Leadership Foundations of America’s thirty-city network, Habitat for Humanity International’s Urban Program, and the Twin Cities-area New American Collaborative.  These large initiatives link the resources of organizations within and across communities to successfully achieve their goals and build capacity across a broad spectrum of organizations.

Regional Associations of Grantmakers and State Associations of Nonprofits: Finding and Sharing Common Ground

Sponsored by Center for Nonprofit Management - Kellogg School of Management

Presenters:  Paula Shoecraft, Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers; Catherine Carabetta, Donors Forum of Chicago; Rob Collier, Council of Michigan Foundations; Lora Pollari-Welbes, National Council of Nonprofit Associations; Sam Singh, Michigan Nonprofit Association

Where do state associations of nonprofits and regional associations of grantmakers come together?  Where are they apart?  Can they live in harmony? How can they enrich each other and both be strengthened?  This interactive session will address key issues of collaboration between these important infrastructure organizations on national and local levels — and how it plays out "on the ground."

The Coalition for New Philanthropy: A Case Study in Sustainable Collaboration

Sponsored by Center for Nonprofit Management - Kellogg School of Management

Presenters:  John Vogelsang, Support Center for Nonprofit Management (NY);  Barbara Taveras, Coalition for New Philanthropy

Using an evaluative case study that was recently completed of a coalition of three ethnic foundations, a regional grantmakers association, and an academic institution, this session will explore what contributes to sustainable collaborations, what are successful processes for donor engagement, and how a participatory evaluation process can be used to foster organizational learning among the partners. The purpose of the coalition is to empower African-American, Latino and Asian American donors to increase the effectiveness and impact of their philanthropic resources.

Unlocking Fundraising Potential

Presenters:  Terry Axelrod and Christine Dixon, Raising More Money; Emily Furlong, Philanthropy & NP Leadership Center, Rollins College

Teaching nonprofits in your community to build self-sustaining funding from individual donors is capacity building in the very best sense.  This session will introduce you to a systematic model for developing passionate lifelong donors that can be customized for every nonprofit organization.  Learn how other MSOs have used this model to empower their local groups.
