Building Fundraising Capacity within Communities of Color |

|
Thursday, August 3, 9:00am - 10:30am Track: Financial Management and Fundraising PresenterSteve Lew, CompassPoint Nonprofit Services
DescriptionFundraising training is often seen as a panacea for strengthening an individual competency and organizational approach to raise contributed funds. Organizations based in communities of color often critique fundraising training programs as less relevant to community conditions or useful to their group’s dynamics. The Fundraising Academy was developed by CompassPoint and Grassroots Fundraising Journal as a way to build deeper capacity to raise funds within communities of color. We will report on the distinct features in design and delivery of this capacity building intervention (including fundraising coaching, peer learning, and intensive training) and the distinct outcomes seen in 40 organizations that have completed the Fundraising Academy for Communities of Color. Using the work of the Academy, the session will discuss not only the learnings from executing this intervention, but also talk about the conceptual development that has informed the design. The session will include a large group discussion on the challenges faced by fundraising capacity builders in communities of color.
