Executive Transition for Organizations of Color: A "Deep Dive" Peer Exchange

Friday, August 4, 10:45am - 12:15pm

Track:  Cultural Competency

Presenters

Monika K. Moss, MKM Management Consulting; June Perry, Access to Success

Description

This facilitated peer learning session is designed especially for seasoned consultants who are looking to stimulate each others' learning by addressing the implications of the leadership transition of the civil rights/Baby Boomer generation who are often the long term founding executive directors of color, leaders of organizations of color or organizational leaders working in communities of color.  How does this phenomenon pose a leadership crisis and an opportunity for transformational change in communities of color?  In addition to increasing our collective awareness about these issues and their implications, we will disseminate key learnings and recommendations resulting from this session through the Alliance network.

About the Presenters

Monika Moss, MKM Management Consulting

MossMonika K. Moss is an African American female owner of MKM Management Consulting which works primarily with nonprofit organizations. Many of these organizations are lead by and/or serve people of color and are facing imminent leadership transition challenges as the civil rights generation of leaders retire, organizations see their funding base slashed by current politics and the needs for their services increase by leaps and bounds. Monika has worked in the field for over 20 years and has lead MKM Management Consulting for 18 years. She holds degrees from Howard University and Columbia University, is affiliated with the Center for Nonprofit Policy and Practice at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University and is a faculty member of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland's Center for Organizational Systems Development.

June Perry, Access to Success

PerryJune Martin Perry is well known locally and nationally for her work in the nonprofit arena.  She prefers to call herself a "social entrepreneur" rather than a nonprofit leader. She started a non profit in 1975 and under her continuous leadership, thirty one years later the agency employs over 50 social workers and is often lauded as one of the most successful social service and mental health agencies in Milwaukee. She retired from that position in June, 2006 utilizing her training in Executive Transition Management and carefully executing a succession plan to identify and train her successor, the current Associate Director. Launching Access to Success in 2006, June was recently one of nine senior consultants licensed by the Standards for Excellence Institute to help nonprofits receive Standards of Excellence Institute certification.
