Cultural Competency Initiative

Highlights of Resources for Katrina Relief Assistance

With lively public debate about hurricane response, many nonprofit leaders and capacity builders are clear that the nonprofit sector has a key role. More than ever see the opportunity—and critical importance—of cultural competency in the way nonprofits work and get support.  The Alliance offers a key set of resources to make your efforts more effective.

Review and compare definitions of cultural competency that are relevant to nonprofits and the consultants, funders, technical assistance providers and others who work to increase their ability to meet public interests and public needs.  Consider a list of basic questions as you guide nonprofits or assist directly in hurricane response.

Take a look at the reality of race and poverty, which make a compelling case for ensuring nonprofits and those who support them take culturally appropriate action.  And consider how it is that an organization’s cultural competency shapes how successful its efforts will be.

Learn about broader perspectives on race and on poverty, and how the "lens" we see through makes a difference in the quality of our action, whether in advocating for policy change that could reduce damage and improve recovery from disasters; or in the ongoing work of creating sustainable organizations with a positive impact—or in the world of funding:
