  • A research-based discussion of the inherent challenges of capacity building. As many have learned, it is all too easy for capacity building projects and dollars to be ineffective. It is important to understand why.
  • Consulting matters. Many grantmakers and consultants do not appreciate that a traditional consulting approach is not well suited to capacity building. A developmental consulting approach is described that offers greater promise.   
  • Three general approaches to capacity building are described and compared, illustrated by nine detailed case studies of capacity building programs.
