New Publications

The Dynamics of Technology for Social Change

Jonathan Peizer, former Soros Foundations CTO recently released a new book, The Dynamics of Technology for Social Change: Understanding the Factors That Influence Results: Lessons Learned from the Field.  The book offers an understanding on how technology has led to efficiency and productivity in the private sector and how the social sector can use technology to effectively strengthen civil society.  Mr. Peizer's multi-sector experience helps provide insights into how the various sectors understand the issues and the impact of differing institutional objectives on project outcomes.  The book offers various strategies covering capacity, marketing, partnerships, sustainability, implementation and evaluation among other topics.


Flipping the Script: White Privilege and Community Building

Flipping the Script: White Privilege and Community Building, written by Maggie Potapchuk of MP Associates and Sally Leiderman from the Center for Assessment and Policy Development, is a monograph designed for people who work in communities to identify and address issues of white privilege, oppression, racism and power as they play out in this work.  The monograph includes an analysis of early responses to Hurricane Katrina to illustrate white privilege and racism in action at multiple levels and includes a chapter about doing one's own work on white privilege, written primarily for white people.

 

New Program/Research

Foundation Center Creates New 'Alexis Institute for Civil Society and Philanthropy'

The Foundation Center has announced the creation of its new Alexis Institute for Civil Society and Philanthropy, designed to serve as a major source of knowledge on the rapidly evolving world of philanthropy and civil society in the U.S. and around the world.  Lester M. Salamon, Professor and Director of the Center for Civil Society Studies at Johns Hopkins University, has been named the founding director of this new institute.

 

Applegate Consulting Group to Facilitate a Cross-Race Study Circle at Montgomery College

This summer, Beth Applegate, president of Applegate Consulting Group and adjunct faculty for Montgomery College (MD) will facilitate a cross-race study circle at Montgomery College co-sponsored by IMPACT Silver Spring and the Diversity Management Institute at Montgomery College. A Study Circle brings together small groups of 10-15 people for six two-hour sessions to confront and discuss racial and ethnic barriers to civic participation. Study Circles are designed to encourage different levels of change including: stronger relationships based on trust, increased knowledge about other's cultures, open and honest dialogue about racial and ethnic differences.  To learn more or register for the cross-race study circle visit: www.montgomerycollege.edu/wdce/diversity.html

Alliance Members Part of First Group of Licensed Consultants for the Standards of Excellence Program

June Perry of the New Concept Self Development Center in Milwaukee, WI; Eric Schmall of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence in Louisville, KY; and, Naomi Takeuchi of 1000 Cranes, LLC in Durham, NC are part of the first group of Licensed Consultants for the Standards of Excellence Program.  The Licensed Consultants can assist nonprofits in improving their governance and management through organizational assessments, consulting and training and assistance in the application process for Standards of Excellence Institute's national certification.


Alliance Member's Book Receives National Award

The new book from Alliance member Carter McNamara of Authenticity Consulting, LLC, was recently named as a Finalist in the Business/Career/Sales category of the prestigious 2006 Independent Publisher Book Awards.  His book, Field Guide to Consulting and Organizational Development With Nonprofits, guides consultants and leaders to take a highly collaborative and systems approach to enhance performance, change and learning in nonprofits.  More information is available by clicking on "Publications" at www.authenticityconsulting.com.

Gary Stern Marketing Workbook Featured in Fieldstone Alliance's E-Update

Marketing Workbook for Nonprofit Organizations Volume II: Mobilize People for Marketing Success, written by Gary Stern of Stern Consulting International, was featured in Fieldstone Alliance's Tools You Can Use e-update.  The e-update, released every 3 weeks, features management tools or ideas to help nonprofits be more effective.  The April 27th edition's topic, Four Key Roles Your Supporters Can Play in Fundraising and Marketing Campaigns was adapted from Mr. Stern's book, which is available from Fieldstone Alliance.

Applegate Consulting Group Launches New Web site

Applegate Consulting Group (ACG), a firm specializing in organizational developement, has launched its new website www.applegateonline.com.  ACG focuses on guiding organizational change processes, helping to build multicultural and multiracial organizations, assisting with strategy development and planning, and strengthening leadership skills to create diverse workplace cultures that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially equitable.
