Project Exploration Background: Cofounded by paleontologist Paul Sereno and educator Gabrielle Lyon, Project Exploration is a nonprofit science education organization that makes science accessible to the public—especially minority youth and girls—through personalized experiences with scientists and science. Through youth development programs, school services, exhibits, and online initiatives, Project Exploration involves the public in the excitement of scientific discovery.
Position Description:
Summary: A senior manager reporting to the Director of Programs, this position provides leadership for all youth development programs at Project Exploration. The senior manager of youth programs is responsible for recruiting and retaining students to Project Exploration’s programs, including developing and implementing personalized strategies that GET students involved with science, KEEP them involved with science and EQUIP them to pursue science.
Responsibilities:
• Set and lead the tone of youth programs at Project Exploration
• Develop, manage, implement, and evaluate all youth development programs, youth activities, and program materials. (Youth programs include: after-school and summer programs for Chicago Public School minority youth and girls, field programs, and annual youth development events)
• Manage, supervise, and evaluate full-time youth development staff, including annual personnel evaluations, staff schedules, etc.
• Work with program director to develop performance standards and evaluations for programs
• Facilitate department training as assigned
• Lead youth program evaluation and assessment
• Lead consistent communication and positive relations with youth, their parents, schools, teachers, and principals
• Support the development and maintenance of relationships with schools and other external program partners; develop collaborative and partnership agreements; participate in school and partner meetings
• Ensure that recordkeeping and reporting systems are maintained; complete program-related reporting as required
• Perform other department and organizational responsibilities as assigned
• Work schedule requires occasional evening and/or weekends as well as including in- and out-of-state travel
Qualifications:
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Youth Development, Social Work, Human Services, Education, Science, or related field required; Master’s preferred
• Minimum five years related work experience and demonstrated competence in the field of youth development, education or science education; experience delivering educational field programs preferred
• Minimum three years management experience with three direct reports
• Outstanding organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; proven ability to multi-task in a high energy environment; Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
• Driver’s license and access to a car required
• Full compliance with mandatory background check
• NOTE: Advancing Youth Development Certificate, Youth Worker Certification Levels I and/or II, knowledge of YouthServices.Net database software, and Spanish language skills a plus
